Piano Keys - Pianist Sussex

Performing as a Wedding Pianist in Sussex

My name is Eugene Portman and I am provided with a constant stream of work as a wedding pianist in West Sussex. I suppose that this is not surprising as the region is definitely a hotspot for weddings. I am lucky in that I live in the area, so I can tap into this source of work.

West Sussex has an incredible number of beautiful wedding venues and I have played the piano in many of them. Notable examples are Edes House in Chichester, East Court Mansion in East Grinstead, Alias Seattle at Brighton Marina, and Langshott Manor near Gatwick.

Wedding Music

Most of my work throughout West Sussex is as a wedding pianist and because of this, I have to be versatile. Being versatile means that I can provide music for every part of your big day. For instance, I’m often asked to play Bach and Debussy for the ceremony followed by jazz and swing for the drinks reception. Jazz is very popular, particularly in the Sussex area, and most of the weddings I play the piano for ask for this style of music at some point.

The styles I cover include classical, ragtime, blues, Latin, jazz, swing, and even sing-along. The broad range I play ranges from Schubert and Einaudi to Coldplay and Oasis.

The Grand Piano Shell

Very few of the venues in Sussex have a piano and many pianists get around this by using a digital piano for weddings and other events. Digital pianos are great as they are always in tune, they sound great and they can be set up anywhere. However, there is a snag in that many people like the look of a real piano rather than something that looks like an electronic keyboard. I have the answer to this dilemma with my baby grand piano shell. This looks like a real piano but discretely hides a digital piano. The result not only looks good, but it has all the advantages that a digital piano has to offer. This piece of equipment can be set up anywhere, even outside. In fact, I use the baby grand piano shell for quite a lot of the events I play for in the Sussex area.

I charge an extra £80 for the use of the baby grand piano shell. Please see this page for more information.

My Work as a Sing-along Pianist in Sussex

Recently there has been a growing trend to hire me as a sing-along pianist in the West Sussex area. Most of these bookings are for Cockney themed events, but sometimes a sing-song goes down really well at quite formal functions. In fact, I have even had couples hire me to do a sing-along as part of their wedding day.

A lot of the sing-along events I play the piano for are in Sussex pubs and are often Wartime events and Cockney themed nights. They are usually great fun and it is so nice to see everyone enjoying themselves. When I am hired for these sing-along events, I bring all the song sheets and I usually dress in true Cockney attire. This includes waistcoat, bowler, hat, red neckerchief, grandad shirt, pocket watch, etc.

Please visit this page HERE to find out more. Alternatively, visit my other site at and find out where I am next playing the piano for a sing-along event in Sussex.

West Sussex has always given me plenty of events as a solo pianist for weddings, but I can also provide larger line-ups. Furthermore, these larger line-ups can be anything from a duo right up to a five-piece jazz band. Here is a list of all the line-ups I offer:

  • Duo – piano and vocals or piano and bass
  • Trio – piano, bass and vocals or piano, bass and drums
  • Quartet – piano, bass, drums and vocals or piano, bass, drums and sax
  • Five Piece Jazz Band – piano, bass, drums, sax and vocals

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have an queries or need any information from me. If you would like a quote for your event then please fill in the form HERE. Alternatively email me at
